Cookie policy
Last updated November 5, 2026
In short
Kindred uses a small number of strictly necessary cookies and browser storage to keep you signed in, remember your language and settings, and keep the app working on weak connections. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
What cookies and local storage are
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Local storage, IndexedDB and service-worker caches are similar browser features that let Kindred keep data on your device, for example so the app opens quickly and still works on a weak connection. In this policy we call all of these “cookies”.
“First-party” cookies are set by Kindred. “Third-party” cookies are set by another company's service. Some cookies last only until you close your browser; others stay for a set period.
Strictly necessary
These are needed for Kindred to work and to keep it secure, so they cannot be switched off. We use them on the basis of our legitimate interests and, where required, because they are strictly necessary for the service you asked for.
- kindred_session (cookie, 30 days): keeps you signed in to your account. It is HttpOnly and Secure, so scripts cannot read it.
- kindred-locale (cookie, 1 year): remembers the language you chose or that we picked for your country.
- kindred:v1 (local storage): your Kindred data on this device, such as your profile, matches, messages waiting to send and game progress. When you are signed in, it is synced to your account so clearing your browser loses nothing.
- kindred:player-id (local storage): a random identifier that links your games, results and leaderboard ratings to you.
- Service-worker caches: copies of pages, images and app code so Kindred loads fast and works offline. They are refreshed with each new version of the app.
- Security and abuse protection used for rate limiting and to block bots and fraud.
Preferences
We remember choices like data-saver mode, sounds and haptics, recent searches, dismissed tips and whether you have seen the install prompt. These are stored in local storage on your device only, are not sent to us for tracking, and you can clear them at any time.
Analytics (optional)
Kindred does not currently use analytics or advertising cookies, and we never sell browsing data. If we introduce optional analytics, for example to understand which features help people get to a date or to measure page speed, we will only use them after you agree, you will be able to change your mind at any time, and we will update this policy first.
Third-party services
Some features rely on other companies. When you pay, our payment provider Paystack (or your app store) shows its checkout and may set its own cookies to process the payment and prevent fraud, under its own policy. Our hosting provider may process technical data such as your IP address to deliver the site securely. We do not allow third parties to set advertising cookies on Kindred.
Your choices
You can block or delete cookies and site data in your browser settings, and most browsers let you do this for a single site. If you block strictly necessary cookies, Kindred may not work properly: you will be signed out, and data on this device that has not yet been synced (for example messages waiting to send) will be lost.
Logging out from Me removes your session cookie and clears your Kindred data from that device; your account data stays safe on our servers.
Changes and contact
We will update this policy if we change the cookies we use, and the “Last updated” date at the top will change. Questions? Contact our privacy team through the Help page. For more about how we handle personal data, read our Privacy policy.
